A727 Leak

Hi All

Any pointers please.

I'm starting to lose a lot of trans fluid but haven't had time yet to crawl under the car yet, it does seem to be coming from the pan/sump area, more like the front towards the bell housing.

Is this a common problem/area to have a leak? any pointers on what might be on the way out before I drive down to my local garage would be great please.

Yes. If it is leaking from the front of the bellhousing it is the front seal where the torque converter neck slips into the front of the trans. It is an easy seal to replace yourself but will require the trans dropped out of the car.

You could also just have too much fluid in there. Always check the level hot and in neutral (not park) after selecting all the gear positions and fill it no more than just over the MIN mark. Just a small chance it is that and worth checking first.

There are other seals it can leak from too but if it is dripping out of the bellhousing it will be that front seal.

the level always came down to the "add 1 pint" so I always topped back up to max (checking when hot) so I'll have a run about this weekend and just double check it doesn't drop too low.

sorry bit out of touch which these type of parts, who can you recommend I contact for seals just for future ref.

Any of the usual US parts places should have one. I replace that seal every time I drop the box or remove the engine because it always leaks if you try to re-use it.

If you contact "Blue" in the MMA he will have some in stock and will be glad to sell you one.

I dropped the trans due a leak at the front and I found the converter cracked

That is either a poorly constructed converter OR you are putting a huge amount of power through it. Or both. :wink:

Of course maybe one or two of these options but this is a $1000 converter ready to handle near 1000HP and comes from a high reputation builder in the states.

Has this been leaking since you purchased the convertor, or has it just recently happened? :shock:
I'm surprised to see that on a convertor of this type, a full flanged hub was not used. Most of the high horsepower/high end/ high $$$ convertors I've seen in the past use a fully flanged hub for added strength.
If it's been leaking there since you got it, I think someone at the factory didn't properly check the weld for leaks. Poor weld penetration is often the cause for a leak to appear there. Also, if you can do it, check the runout on the hub, if excessive, the hub might be in crooked. :?:
If you can check the runout, email me and let me know what measurements you get. On a high $$$ unit, the runout should not exceed .005 to .010. Factory specs are often .025 or more.
