I am changing my speedometer gear to a 31 tooth one but i am not sure where to align the index marks up for the new gear. Here is a description i got off internet to do it [ Clean the housing so you can read the index marks and numbers on the outside of the housing. Put the new gear in the housing, line up the index mark on the case with the correct index mark on the housing (for the teeth range you’re using).] The problem is the numbers i see stamped are 21 and 25 so i am not sure where to align it up for 31 teeth.

On a 4-speed, the hold down has fingers that set the numerical range, 4 teeth I think. The indicator (on the trans) is a notch that will set the pinion housing in that given range. There really is no fine tuning.
It's a good idea to carefully mesh in the gear/housing as the plastic teeth are fragile.

Here is an update on how i resolved this. I ended up getting a new adapter with 3 sets of range numbers on it including the one for my 31 teeth gear. The adapter that was originally on car only had number range 21 to 25 on it. So on new adapter i lined up 26 to 31 range with mark on case and all is well.
