Small block 70 bellhousing vs 72 bellhousing differences?

Postby Thedeputy » 15 Jun 2008 10:48

Hi,
I've got a four speed in my small block equipped 70 challenger and I'm looking to replace the cast iron bell housing for a lighter aluminum one. Could anyone tell me if a 72 bell bousing is the same as a 70, regarding the mounting of the 1970 style reverse lock out linkage to the bell housing.

Thanks,

Antoon

http://www.brewersperformance.com/prodimages/BH482.jpg Brwers lists 2 different bells for 70-71 and 72-74 Smallblock E-body. I dont know off hand what those changes are but would say it's the reverse lockout detent you speak of. www.brewersperformance.com http://www.brewersperformance.com/products.asp?id=27

I already checked that out, and it seems the mounting points for the z-bar bracket look different. Hard to tell though. Maybe there are some more differences?

I hope you dont mind but I contacted Brewers performance for you and learned something for us all. The 69-71 reverse linkage bracket wont mount to the 72-74 style bellhousing. So to switch to a lighter alloy bell you must also use the same years 69-71 alluminum bellhousing. They do have them in stock or you could find a swap meet used one.

thanks eddie, you're the man!!

I was thinking about sending them an email as well, but you beat me to it
So it seems I definately need a 70 style bell if I want my lock-out linkage to work.

Well then, this one's busted.
