Steps for Changing Rear Axle Seal?

Postby bvoston » 12 May 2008 1:06

Hello,
My '70 Challenger ( 8 3/4 posi) is leaking gear oil from the inner rear axle seal into the brake drum on the pass. side.

Anyone done this fix before? What steps are needed? I assume the brake assembly needs to come off and the axle removed? Anyone have the steps down for this?

Thanks very much!

The axle endplay adjuster is on the passenger side. You will need a dial gauge to adjust end play when you are done. About 8-10 thou endplay I think it is. Check the manual.

You need an axle puller as well of course.

I don't have one so when I have done this in the past I just jam some blocks of wood against the back plate and put the drum on the studs backwards (inside facing out) against the wood. Then I put three wheel nuts on and tighten them so the axle pulls out.

Make sure you remove all the bolts and everything first though. I left a bolt in by mistake once and wondered why the damn thing wouldn't pull out.
