Stalling in Gear

Sometimes when Im sitting at traffic lights in neutral it idles ok, but when I shift it to drive she cuts out just as Im about to give it gas....

Has anybody else had this problem if so what are the likely causes and of course what are the solutions...

From reading up on it perhaps its the idle setting is wrong but could it be something else?

What is your engine idle speed?

What is your inital timing set at?

Is your idle mixture set to just lean of max manifold vacuum or max rpm?

How many rpm does the engine drop when put into gear?

Any vacuum leaks?

Wayne. is the carby on your engine very old? Is it dirty looking? It sounds like it's your accelerator pump. It could also be a slight vacum leak around the base of the carb. Have you tried to snug the base fasteners? Inquiring minds want to know. :lol:

Once again Im bamboozled with alot of that...ok all of that!! :mrgreen:

I will try and digest that info when the rugger is over Ireland are winning at the minute against Namibia!!

Idling issue

I had a very similar issue and could go into a diatribe about what I changed/replaced ultimately changing out the Holley and still had the problem.

Here is the solution that finally worked and as crazy as it sounds it works, if I have a pic I will also attach later I was told by a guy that races that the primary flapper on my holley (even though it was brand new) was shutting and causing the car stall and not idle. He had me take a piece of coat hangar and put it in the flapper arm and connect it to the back section of the holley thus keeping the flapper from ever shutting

I told him he was drunk but low and behold my chally has run and never ever stalls again................

Dont know if this is your issue but its a cheap cheap fix.

I just used a zip tie. You dont have a choke. It's 'wired' open. I dont use one either. :wink2:

That flap is the choke. Plus you have a manual choke. If you don't have it wired up it will flap shut.

I cut the whole choke horn off my carb. No flap to worry about now and better airflow into it. :thumbsup:

So if I keep the flapper open she wont cut out...I suppose its hard to see if this is the problem when shes is driving but I will give it a go..thanks!! :thumbsup:

Here's another but simple thing to look at, that a lot don't even think of.

A very dirty air filter. Happened to me once. I couldn't figure out why the beast idled not too bad, but as soon as you applied the throttle it stalled. Someone wiser than me said "look at the air filter". Sure enough, it was dirty enough to cause the problem. For a quick check, take the element out of the air cleaner and see if history repeats itself.
