Clutch type sure-grip

I would like to change out my 2.76 (489 case) rear for a 3.23 sure-grip (also 489 case). The one I am looking at is a clutch type. I have seen a breakdown of this type and I get it, but is there another kind? Why, when I see these do they usually specify "clutch type"? Also, should I be concerned about the axle splines being different? Thanks for your wisdom.

You had better check how many splines you have on your axle to be sure but most were the same.

Clutch type "sure-grip" LSD units are more easily re-buildable when worn that the other type which are known as the cone type.
