Shift Lever Removal

Hi,

I have a 71 Challenger with a 4 speed and I can not figure out how to remove the pistol grip shift lever from the metal sheath that is part of the linkage. The shift lever is not held into the sheath with bolts but rather some kind of impressions. Someone told me I should jam a butter knife in there to disengage the metal impressions but that did not work. Apparently I have the “stiletto” shift lever. Does anyone know how to safely remove the lever without damaging it or the linkage?

Thank you!
Daniel

On my 70 R/T with the factory Hurst there are sheet metal tangs on both sides where the stock fits into the linkage base. I think they are only for friction as they don't seem to detent with anything. I am sure there is no bolt connections on this model. Just pull vertically to remove. Use two hands on the base so as not to dislocate the plastic grips.

You know it would'nt hurt anything to use two butter knifes on the flat sides though. Heck it' been 30 year since I first removed mine, I can't remember that far back. :s006:
