Differential change

Postby turbocal » 17 Apr 2005 11:26

I just had a repair shop change my differential to an Auburn limited slip unit. Now as I accelerate, I can hear a noise coming out of the rear end, sort of a clump, clump, clump noise that increases with speed. This noise gets louder when i take my foot off of the gas pedal. The shop said that I must have a bad limited slip unit, in which i bought new, so they put my old unit back in. Now I have the same noise, a noise that I did not have before with the old unit. They said they did use the correcet oils and additives, but the noise remains. So I know the limiited slip unit is not bad. I have an 8 3/4 rear with a 489 case. Any suggestions on what they are doing wrong.

I have had a good long think about this but I cannot think for the life of me what they might have done.

I swear. These days it pays to do everything yourself. You certainly couldn't mess up as bad as most "professionals" out there.

My 489 was replaced with a unit from Randy's ring and pinion, and the grinding started, mostly around corners. The thought it was an adjustment having to do with the axel, and played around with it. There is some way from the passengers’ side that you can adjust the shaft in or out. Someone with a little more technical knowledge could specify. Then I put the old rear end in and the noise went away.

Hope this helps.

That adjustment you are thinking of Todd is "axle end play".

Thanks for the help guys. I contacted the people at Auburn gears and they also mentioned that the axle end play needs to be precisely adjusted by the adjustment on the passenger side axle also. I will give my mechanic this information and let you all know how it turns out.

....and don´t forget the locking nut, or you will regret it! Good luck!
