727 tranny swap

Postby daleawalker » 12 Sep 2004 3:27

I've got a 1970 Challenger with a 318. I am putting in a stock 727 in replacement of the 904 that was in it. My question is: What all should I be concerned with in the swap? I will have the driveshaft cut to fit, and have a new crossmember support coming to fit the 727. What else can you all recommend that I keep an eye out for?

Thanks,

727 Swap

Check the engine flex plate, as the 904 is different from the 727.
Check all kickdown linkages, if you can, get the linkage that comes with the 727 you're getting.
Make sure your 727 is for the small block.
Other than that and what you mentioned, should be a snap.

More questions....

Thanks for the tips. One question I have is in regards to the bolt pattern on the tranny - does the 727 not use the top center bolt hole on the engine? The tranny I got didn't have it and my brother's truck (with a 318/727) does not have it either. :?: Thought that to be rather strange.

What is the main difference in the flex plates? The one I have off the 904 is extremely close to lining up - two opposite ones do, while the other two are just off enough that the bolts won't start in the threads in the converter. I did not get measurements off the converter (no tape measure at the time.) I will check that tomorrow.

I'll be shopping for linkage. Bought a remanufactured tranny and don't have all the linkage. From the 904 I have the column lock shaft assembly, but none of the stuff on the transmission. Anyone got some for sale????

Thanks again,
