A 'slapstick' is Chryslers console automatic transmission shifter used in there more sporty cars.

The idea is that from first gear you can just slap the shifter and it will only go one shift at a time. To get the next gear you pulled back on it just slightly first I think (it has been a LONG time since I used one that worked) and then it would slap into third.

I just "rebuilt" my slap-stick shifter, so I know how it works. There's a series of very significant rachet "teeth" on a plate attached to the shifter and a spring-loaded bar that crosses the teeth. As you "slap" it from 1-2 the spring-loaded bar engages the next "tooth" and prevents you from going all the way into 3 or D. As you let off the pressure on the shifter the cross-bar drops into a different "detent" and then it's ready for the next shift. Reasonably simple, actually, and works pretty well if you keep the moving parts clean and lubed properly.
