727 Deep pan

Hello all,

First a quick intro, I have a 440/727 equiped Jensen Interceptor and have followed your site for some time and found it very useful and informative. Many of the the posts are relavent to my vehicle and although not a Challenger it has many of the same attributes. I will understand if you delete my post but on occasion I do have some questions that have not been covered in your archives so here goes.......

I have a question about the types of deep oil pans available for the tf727. They seem to be all aluminium types with an extra 2 to 4 quarts or the mopar steel pan with an extra 2 quarts, plus drain plugs in all. My question is which is the best type to fit (if necessary at all) and do they significantly lower the ground clearence of the vehicle?

Will the extra volume be useful for cooling when used in conjunction with a seperate 13 row mocal transmission oil cooler or is it not really necessary if seperate cooling is installed?

Any question that is relevant to our cars is welcome here. :D

My understanding is that increasing the oil capacity keeps it cooler, ensures adequate reserve, and helps keep the oil in top condition.

The cast oil pans are supposed to be better. But I figured if I did bash the pan on something the steel would be less likely to fracture and easier to repair. The steel pans are about an inch and a quarter deeper than stock?? I am just going from memory here. But it is not as low as my exhaust pipes.

My car is quite low and as yet I have only scraped it a couple of times. Mainly going across fields on these damn car shows! :?

I would say that if your engine and trans are stock you don't need a deeper pan. Just fit a sump plug to your existing pan the next time you have it off. Keeping the trans cool with a remote cooler is more effective than adding capacity I feel.

It is when you start producing large amounts of power you really need as much capacity and cooling as possible.

However we have people on here that know more about these things than me so await their comments!
