slapstick shifter

Postby LITEMUP » 04 Apr 2004 20:00

something broke or fell off or came unattached because while i was driving my car yesterday, it became very easy to change gears.
like i still have my gear selection with my shifter, but if i was to push in the top button, there is NO resistance when i run through the gears. you can not tell which gear you are in by feel. no little bumps. you must look at the shifter. you cant count them as you go down from park, theres nothing to feel. i hope i made this clear enough. what might i start out checking?

by the way, this is not related to the shifting/line pressure going from say 1st to 2nd. this is sitting still w/ or w/o the car running. i really think this is something in the valve body, say a spring? or something that would allow for less tension and resistance.

On the valve body gear selector there is a spring mounted steel ball which jumps into indents that corrospond to the gear positions.

I would disconnect the linkage to the shifter under the car and try moving the gear selector on the trans by hand. I should have a positive position for each gear. If not you had better drop the pan off and have a look.

thanks dave. about 3 o'clock this morning if found an exploded view of the valve body and i remember it now. i figure something happend to that ball or even the retaining pin that holds the spring and ball in place.

pulled the lingage off and there was no interuptions in the movement. so it looks like its something in the ball mechinism (ball, spring, or pin) i'll pull the valve body and have a look.
