I can't remember your set-up but if you have an aftermarket gear shifter that is cable operated with the cable length adjustment at the trans end you need to do the following.
Switch the engine off, put the brake on, move the shifter into the neutral position (N), and get under the car.
The end of the cable will be held in the shift lever on the trans with a split pin. Pull the pin out and free the cable end from the lever on the trans. Now move the lever into the neutral (N) position. If your trans shifts in the normal way (all the way back for 1st gear when you are driving it) then you will find that first is all the way forward with the lever on the trans. Count up the shift positions until you are sure it is in neutral and then adjust the cable length until it will just fit into the lever.
If the shiter cable adjustment is at the shifter end I think you disconnect the cable at the shifter and then find neutral with the trans lever. I think you then adjust the end until it just fits onto the shifter when it is in the right position.
Either way be sure to check it is going into all the gear positions before you drive away!
Hope this makes some kind of sense as I have had a couple of glasses of wine!
