Can't shift anymore??

Postby Hans » 17 Aug 2001 19:35

Another problem with my car...oh damn, just before the big meeting in Belgium. I went outside with the car last night to get some fuel and at the fuelstation I couldn't get my trans in "P" the only thing the car was go forward. I couldnt get the trans in N or R whatever. Well I could get the trans in them but the car only kept driving forward. So I went home again, when I found out that it only could drive in the 2nd gear. So I called a buddy of mine who said maybe I have to adjust some cable under the car. He said I have to put the trans in 1 and then connect the cable to the transso it would fit nice and easy. And then I have to do this with the other gears too. I think I know what he means but can anybody explain me exactly what to do in simple english so I can understand it well. Thanks very much and enjoy your weekend

I can't remember your set-up but if you have an aftermarket gear shifter that is cable operated with the cable length adjustment at the trans end you need to do the following.

Switch the engine off, put the brake on, move the shifter into the neutral position (N), and get under the car.

The end of the cable will be held in the shift lever on the trans with a split pin. Pull the pin out and free the cable end from the lever on the trans. Now move the lever into the neutral (N) position. If your trans shifts in the normal way (all the way back for 1st gear when you are driving it) then you will find that first is all the way forward with the lever on the trans. Count up the shift positions until you are sure it is in neutral and then adjust the cable length until it will just fit into the lever.

If the shiter cable adjustment is at the shifter end I think you disconnect the cable at the shifter and then find neutral with the trans lever. I think you then adjust the end until it just fits onto the shifter when it is in the right position.

Either way be sure to check it is going into all the gear positions before you drive away!

Hope this makes some kind of sense as I have had a couple of glasses of wine!

I found out what the problem was Dave, the 'thing' around the cable was broke caused by the headers, so when I put the trans in P the cable was pushed out. Don't know if THIS makes any sense...but that's because I don't know every english word.

I know what you are saying Hans. Sometimes you put things better than me.

Was it caused be heat from the headers? I just put header wrap on mine and also insulated the shifter cable because of heat problems with the shifter cable.
