Kickdown to the carb

Postby Hans » 17 Aug 2001 6:53

Can anybody tell me how the kickdown is mounted to the carburator. It's a 340 engine with an edelbrock carb and a 727 transmission. I'm asking this cause I just put in the engine again and fired it up yesterday but I don't have a kickdown at the moment. So if anybody could post a picture of how it should be please ...

Which type of linkage is it? Is it the kind that has an adjustable rod from the carb to a swivel on the throttle cable mount and then a vertical adjustable rod to another swivel on the trans with a third non-adjustable rod going to the lever on the trans?

Don't drive the car without a kickdown lever or you will damage the trans.

SEE ALSO 'Adjusting the Kickdown Lever'.

Or did you just want to know how it fits onto the carb itself?

Thanks Dave, but...
Your picture doesn't seem to be the same as the linkage I have. I will try to make/scan a pic of the linkage I have. It's not complete what I have, but I just don't know what I'm missing.

When I got my Challenger it was in pieces. I had no idea what the kick down was like when the car was original. I am running 1970, 340 with a 727 trans and Thermoquad. What ended up working for me was a solid piece rod that rests in a "U" grove bracket near where the pivot is as in the picture above. My 318's have the pivot and two piece rods. The Challenger kick down came out of a 318 Dodge van. There was plenty of firewall room for the one piece rod. It works just fine but I doubt it was originally set up that way.

Notice mine has a metal sleeve half way down each half of the linkage.

That was because when I switched to a six pack i had to lengthen the vertical piece to the trans and shorten the bit to the carb.

I will scan some drawings of the different types shortly for you mate.

Thanks Dave, now i know how it should be. I have the setup showed in scan two. I only miss the throttle rod and one spring. So I could make it complete within this week or something. Thanks again.
