Correct Wiper Motor?

I would like to know which of these wiper motors would be correct for 1970?
Thanks

Both of them might be correct for 1970. It depends on the part number. The main difference is that the upper is a three speed motor and the one below is a two speed motor.

The upper one was used on cars with VARIABLE speed wipers. Although that particular one looks more modern than the 1970 version as it has what looks like a plastic or rubber cover on the top of the gearbox.

Here is a chart that might be useful:

I have never fully understood the difference between the 3-speed and the variable speed setups.
Am I overcomplicating things?

I think it is just the way they are switched that makes them 3-speed or variable speed. But I don't ever remember seeing a Challenger with 3-speed. I only know of variable speed or 2-speed options.

I could be wrong????

BARRY! :D

The wiper motor with the black "humpy" switch plate/gear housing cover was used in 1972 and later models, 1970 model would have the flat switch plate with the reddish/brown sealant.

When I restore/build a wiper motor I test with a three speed switch, however, if the motor is for an E body application it will run as a variable speed dependant upon the switch, other than part number there's no difference in the way the wiper motor builds

3799239 was superceded by part number 3431790 but is for 74-76 EX VAL, DART, VOL, ASP 2 SPD WIPER MOTOR (SA 3799239, 3799367)

The three speed motor I can't see the part number on from the photo.

Hopefully I helped a little and hopefully didn't confuse anyone with my "assistance", such that it is :?

Correct me if I'm making a blindingly obvious error but isn't the lower one the wrong shape for an E body anyway :?:
My 72 had a variable speed wiper switch but it was shot and I only had a couple of 2 speed ones to use, they work fine and so does the washer jet function but I only get one speed, which is mental fast, and it don't park, I have to turn off the switch in just the right place :!: ................entertainin tho

Ok, so I can gather by this that I actually have the wrong motor on my 1970, correct?

You need to tell us what wipers it came with.

If you have a 3 speed switch and a two speed motor you will get one speed only and it'll park where you shut it off and not park properly. A three speed switch works with a three speed motor, and vice versa, you can't mix and match those and have proper function.

For the 1970 E body the correct part number for a 3 speed would have been 3431077.

Don´t you mean a variable speed? (I do not mean to be picky. I just want to know how it all works.)

With the standard dash on a base model Challenger you would have got the two speed as standard with a foot operated washer pump. But obviously the better wipers and electrical washer were optional.

I have the foot pump and have decided to leave that stock. So is the motor that I have the correct one?
Sorry to be a pain about this but I want to be sure it's correct. I do want the wipers to park in the hidden area like they're supposed to.

Thanks

As for wipers, it came with the OEM style with the set pin on the driver's side and the two piece design. They're the original wipers that came on the car.

When I asked I meant the whole wiper system not the blades.

The black wiper motor you have will be the closest match to original.

I think.

Three speed/variable speed A variable speed motor WILL work with a 3 speed switch, it will have three distinct speeds, same motor hooked up to a variable speed switch will operate with variable speed as you turn the knob. Two speed is a two speed, won't work on a variable or three speed switch and function properly, one speed usually, no park except where you turn it off at. Two speed switch 3 speed/variable speed motor will operate incorrectly as well. Two speed motor requires a 2 speed switch, 3 speed/variable speed motor requires either a 3 speed switch or variable speed. The 3 speed/variable speed build EXACTLY the same way, the switch determines if they operate as a 3 speed or variable speed...

I can't see the wiper motor part number in the OP's post, but that motor is a 3 speed/variable speed motor, probably with a 72 or later date code (unless the original owner had to repair the motor and got an over the counter kit which included the gear, gear latch, gasket and humpy switch plate and grease). Part number and Date code would tell us the application/year of the first pictured wiper motor, but ANY 3 speed/variable speed motor can be made to work on ANY application by changing the clocking on the gear housing cover/switch plate and the correct bulkhead connector

Confused yet? :?

The only question I have is was the three speed switch an option on the Challenger? I just don't remember ever seeing one.

Yes, from the model year 1972 an on, you could get a three speed viper switch as an option (See chart below).
It is cut ´n paste-knowledge from: http://www.passion4mopars.com/Mopar-Wip ... s_b_3.html

Yes 72 and up had 3 speed switches (remember that August of each year begins the next production year) 70-72 had variable speed switches
