Dave, I just put a deposit on a numbers matching JS23V0B Challenger, so I may be after you for tips on rebuilding the carbs. It runs, but the middle one leaks. I'm not surprised - its been in the owners back yard since 1986 and it the last registration sticker is from 1979. It shows 81,000 miles on the odometer - not a bad find out here in California. My impression is that the three carbs are each pretty simple - it's the synchronizing and the progressive linkage that's touchy. Am I right?

Wrong. The linkage is just to close them. As stock they open by themselves with vacuum. The drawback to servicing these carbs is the huge expence of the rebuild kits. You need three kits PLUS two vacuum diaphrams. The latter perish after a few years so they WILL need replacing.

Dave, the 440 six-pack Challenger has been mine for a couple of weeks. Do you have an American vendor that you would recommend for their carb rebuild kits? After 17 years in a back yard they need a complete job done on them.

It the center carb is only leaking from the fuel bowl you can take a new gasket from any other Holley with the same bowls for a quick fix. But you WILL need new vacuum diaphrams and they don't come in the kits.

After 17 years of occasional start-ups, I'll just rebuild all three of them. I'm going to try Jack's Auto Parts in New Jersey. They had the best prices on the carb kits and diaphram parts and they ship the same or next day. I'll give a consumer's report after the rebuild.

Yeah but $78 per carb (without the vacuum diaphrams) from Year One seems a lot of money to me. Anyone find any better prices?

BTW Jammy Bugger. When are we going to see some pictures of your car? And when are you going to tell the rest of the guys on here how much it cost you? (the reason I call him jammy bugger!)

Imagine this - my car came missing a few things. What is the correct length of the 440 six-pack air cleaner studs? I'm making new ones since mine were missing and want to get it right.

I had the same problem Jack. But as I don't worry about things like this I just cut two threaded lengths of steel and screwed then into each end carb. With the air cleaner lid in place with the wing nuts and two washers I just cut them short with a little thread showing above the nuts. Then I took them out and turned them over so the cut end is in the carbs leaving a neat end on show. Good enough for me! Might not be good enough for you though.

If I remember right the original studs had a shoulder or a un-threaded section in the middle. There might be a photo in the Year One Catalog?

Anyone got one to measure?

You're right, Dave. I just found them in the Year One catalogue. The original studs have both a shoulder and an unthreaded section above it. Since I just found and bought an OEM air cleaner that is in such great shape that all I have to do is install it, I guess I'll have to get a set of correct studs, too. In for a penny, in for a pound applies in this case.

Consumer report time. I have the two MOPAR diaphragm rebuild kits, the carb-to-air cleaner and carb-to-manifold gasket kit and the Holley center carb rebuild kit (the outer kits are on back order from Holley) from Jack's Auto Parts and have spent $80 so far. This beats Year One and makes the full six-pack rebuild a bit easier to absorb. The web address is www.jacksautoparts.com

I have had the kits from Y.O. before and I think the reason they are so expensive is that each kit contains everything you would possibly need for ANY 2bbl Holley carb. So these are big kits and you end up with most of the contents left over.

I think I will order a set from Jacks Autoparts.

I found that Jack's is out of the rebuild kits for the front and rear carbs and will look for an alternate source that's good in stock since Holley has Jack's on back-order for them. Report to follow on that. My six-pack Challenger just went in for the unibody equivalent of a frame-off paint job/resto so I need these kits while the engine is out of it. BTW, I took "before" photos to post in June or July with the "after" ones I'll be taking when it's done.

I sent my six pack carbs back to holley .It cost $460 including the shipping back .They were rebuilt and replated including linkage,bench flowed .They look New.

I just got off the phone with Jim's Auto Parts and they have their 6-pack rebuild kits in stock. Does anyone have any experience with their product. The lady I spoke with didn't know whether they carried the Holley kits or some other brand, but the price was the same as Jack's - less than half the price at Year One.

It took 4 weeks to get back. I went through holley direct. Some people offer the same service but they just send them to Holley and charge you 650.

I just got off the phone with the Holley facility in Tennesee where they do this work and the time frame is now 6 weeks at a cost of $480 - still not bad for what you get. I have two sets of carbs, so the originals off the car will go to Holley while I rebuild the back-ups myself. Thanks for the info, Peter.

Sure thing, Dave. Their catalogue states you need the carb number so I imagine they won't have the ton of extra parts you get with the more expensive kits. I'll get to it over the next couple of days.

I think these cheaper kits are either exact model specific or not made by Holley. In either case they would not be the same as the larger kits offered by Year One.

The kit I got from Jack's for the center carb was from Holley. The diaphragm rebuild and the mounting/aircleaner gasket kits were from MOPAR Performance. The shipping charge for UPS ground (N/A to England, I'm afraid) from New Jersey to Los Angeles was $7 and the total bill was $79.90. The two outer carb rebuild kits - $29.95 each - are still on back order to Jack's from Holley. I haven't tried the price-matching from Year One. Has anyone?

OK Peter - after seeing the job Holley does on the carbs on another six-pack car, mine left for Tennessee today. They were brand new thirty-two year old carbs after the boys at Holley got done with them. Thanks for the tip!
