There is a leak at the filler tube as it enters the tank the grommet is covered with rubber adhesive which the previous owner had applied as a sealer to contain the leak.
I have a new grommet to go in and went to install it tonight via the manual instructions. Easy Peasy says I.
Remove the 4 screws at the neck/fender, remove the dust cover screws in the trunk floor and draw the filler tube up and out through the fender.
This is impossible as the neck of the filler tube has a large flange as part of its makeup which will only go one way i.e back in to the trunk.
I would think the tank has to be dropped or moved to one side to draw out the filler tube.
Any ideas as to how far this tube runs into the tank ?
Is the new grommet sufficient to contain the fuel or is it installed with a solvent to help seal it?

Ok, it does sound easy, and it is kinda,the tube goes down about 6 inches,make sure the tanks is mostly empty,because you will have to move it back and forth, up and down to get it off the seal inside the tank,its a nasty job as far as the fuel,i cant stand the smell on my fingers

,any way the seal on the tube that has the grommet i have never used and other sealer it is tight when new and shouldent need any other sealer,and yes you will have to remove the tank, and make sure you disconnect the wires and ground,also since its out check the sending unit too,make sure its tight,and does not move hope this helps

I had figured the tank would need to be emptied Drew and had ran the car to the empty digit on the guage.
The guage as in a lot of these cars is ropey so I siphoned of what was left in the tank which ran to about 4 gallons with the marker slowly running down to half way through the E mark on the guage.
I would think the sender float is punctured or the arm needs to be bent and reset to give a clearer indication of whats in the tank.

I think I managed once without removing the tank completely. I just dropped it down on the hangers a bit. You have to twist the neck around and with luck you can get it up and out of the trunk.

Probably easier with the tank completely free and someone holding it from under the car though.

Yes it can be done that way. Drop one of the straps (can't remember which side) if needed. Tape up the filler tube or the trunk will gouge the finish though. Just use a little silicone grease on the grommet and it should fit well. And... don't forget the deck seal before installing the tube.
