Oil Pump Choices

I'm at a crossroads with my engine (which we're rebuilding) and want to know if it benefits me to go with a high performance oil pump, seeing as I'm going to be upgrading to a mid-level cam.
Does this make sense? It's a small price difference and I always thought that the more oil you can get to your engine the better.

I've found 2 models with Summit, one sealed and the other non-sealed.
What's the difference?

Thanks!

Fit a high volume pump fitted with the black hemi/6-pack spring.

Also fit a high performance oil pump/distributor drive. You don't want the hex end rounding off or the gear breaking loose on the shaft.

If you are staying mild don't bother with a 1/2 inch oil pick-up conversion. But the stock type hemi/6-pack windage tray is a good idea. Just open up the stock drainback holes more and it will work fine.

I would use Dave's recommendation's 100% But, if you feel ambitious or your machinist, radiusing the block junction where the oil pump bolts onto helps a bunch. There is a sharp 90 degree turn into the oil pickup tube boss. This is a major restriction, and the modification takes a few minutes with a ball shaped carbide bit,(cast iron), die grinder. Is FREE! Here is a pic of what I'm talking about. :wink2:

Oh wait! Its a 318!

No need to fit high performance anything. Just use cheap stock parts or you are wasting your money.

Opps, I thought it was a big block too

If it is a small block, have your machinist overbore the oil passage to the rockers as they are deficient in that part of the oiling system.

As for pumps, maybe old school stuff but Mellings hi volume has worked with good results.
