Exhaust Debris

Postby Jon » 25 Feb 2010 1:17

Just started the Challenger after about 6 weeks of sitting and noticed black specs on the garage floor. Didn't rev it at all but thought it might be carbon buildup. Being inquisitive I took a magnet and most of the particles adhered to it. Any thoughts. :s008:

YOUR GONNA DIE !!!!!!!!!!!!! :s007: lol J/K, i have seen those too, just some build up of moisture has let a little corroded part of your precious exhaust, and some day it will just plain rust through, thats the only thing i can think it is ,what do you think it is jon? ,really jon it should be ok i think

Yeah Drew, corrosion was my first thought too especially since I want to justify to the wife a new exhaust. TTI's, turbo mufflers, stainless tubes to factory tips. (with cutouts of coarse.)

Then reality set in for a moment thinking maybe that AV100 I been spew-in could lead to some deposits. :? Surly not metallic soot though. :s012:

Yes the iron in that carbon is from surface rust inside the exhaust pipe.

Water is a by-product of combustion. Most exhaust pipes rust from the inside out faster than from the outside in.

If you really want to make your exhaust rust as fast as possible you should start your car on a regular basis and bring it up to temperature without driving it anywhere.
This works best in the winter months.

Your exhaust will rust through in just a couple of years if you do it right.
It's because without driving any distance at speed the inside of the pipes never dries out.

When I was a kid the guy next door to us never used his car but fired it up regular. The only miles he ever put on it were the one week a year he went on holiday in it and the trips to the exhaust shop every couple of years.

Thank's for the advice Dave I'll keep doing this procedure so I can get that new system I been wanting. :lol2:

There was quite a bit of steam and some water coming from the exhaust so I ran it about 20 minutes till it cleared (and killed off most of the spiders in the garage.)

I have notice more soot around the exhaust tips since using the avgas. It supposedly has even more lead then the old 70's pump gas. Thought maybe these deposits might have something to do with the pitting around the tail light lens trim. :?

are you using aviation gas?

its ok but you should understand that an airplane and a car work in different enviornments,

yes av gas will work in just about any internal combustion engine, but an airplanes takes off and climbs to its altitude and the general out side temperature is at or below zero F,

even in the summertime it may reach 20 or 30 tops above zero f

, and an airplane does not turn a high rpm.a typical prop job loafs along at 2 or 3 thousand rpms,

of course there are some high performance airplanes that are exceptions but normally the engine just kinda drones along,

not really what car does, so the fuel your are using is not really designed for automotive use

and modern gas builds up more varnish and deposits much faster , you might consider a lead additive or using actual "off road " race fuel, i mix it with pump gas in the summer and it helps with vapor lock, and does contain some lead hence the "off road use only",i dont need the lead as i have newer valves not needing lead, but for you if it is an older engine you might see if you can get some race gas it might run a little cleaner

sorry for the lecture i just have some literature about fuel and thought i would pass it on

Daves right ( as aiways! ) about the water made during combustion. For every gallon of gods magic elixir you burn you produce about the same in water. Ever noticed modern cars with water just plain dripping out of the tailpipes and looking like they are "steaming" during warm up even on a fairly mild day.
I started my Challenger up last weekend and got a massive bollocking for leaving two huge black stains against the rear valance of wifes new M3, just cos I could'nt be arsed to roll it ten foot away. Twat.

Thanks for the info Drew, After experimenting a bit, I found mixing 15% AV works to keep the detonation at bay and hopefully the lead coats the old valve seats. So no more fuel additives. :s004:

Your read makes good sense though as the 340 seams to run a little sluggish with the mix. Not as much POP. Already added +3 ignition advance so next thing might be some jetting changes.

BTW: WHo is Captian Scarlett. Star Teck or sompthin. :s006:

Thunderbirds was still the best out of all his stuff.

I still think "Parker" was slipping Lady Penelopy a length in the evenings.

I always thought Captain Scarlet had the edge over Thunderbirds, just that little bit more sinister, "voice of the mysterons", the two shadow rings that went over the face of someone about to die.............creepy shit :!:

what about the profanity laced/porn show movie the americans made ,and they had the marionettes having sex of all things and they just made a mockery of the whole series,i always just busted out laughing when the had the "real human hands" operating the ships, control boards , etc,

i have a "n" scale train layout that i have saved since i was a kid,an did alot of miniature land scaping as a hobby, and always appreciated the countless hours it took just to make one take
