1970 exhaust system ?

Postby rtse4406pack » 02 May 2009 1:00

hey guys its been awhile since i posted but i thought i would ask you guys a question?
i am currently running a completely stock exhaust system and i am tired on how quite it is and looking to install an aftermarket exhaust system.
does any company sell the full exhaust system to fit my factory exhaust manifolds without headers.
i would like an exhaust to order and install myself without no modifications to do and hopefully stainless steel. does flowmaster, magnaflow etc... have an exhaust for the 70 challenger 440 engine?
any opinions are welcome. will be using my factory exhaust tips as well. :s017:

Check them out. They sell complete systems and have all the hangers too. They are very spendy however. I know there are other systems out there. This is just one option.

No system on the market in the US will fit without hassle and some modification.

The best option is a TTI system. But they are expensive and you may still have to modify it to fit correctly.

A professional restoration guy here in the UK has restored several B-body cars recently and has found every TTI system he has bought has needed cutting and welding. Yet these are THE BEST performance systems out there. :s008:

Why not just replace the existing mufflers with a pair of dynomax mufflers? They will give you the sound you want without being too loud or harsh.

Danny, why not shelve the stock exhaust and install a set of Headers made by Dougs or TTI's and buy the Stainless Exhaust pre-fabbed from either Jeggies or Summit or the stainless 'shops' that sell them like stainless werks ect then have the whole shebang pro-installed by a exhaust shop, which you'll have to do some tweaking anyways. This will give you 30 or so H.P. and more importantly the same or more torque, run a bit cooler, sound sweet! The quality headers made by either are leak-proof if installed with good gaskets, thick flanges prevent warping so no more weird sounds which make the car sound 'cheap'!! After a ride in my R/T, the 'sound' of that X-Pipe system and the engine WOT stays with you for days or hours dpending on your attention span!

thank you guys for your thoughts and opinions.
i am going to put the stock exhaust away anyways.
dont really want headers, just want a bit more of a muscle sound.
beats having those crappy resonators and mufflers combined with the stock system. i am sure that if i install flowmasters were the resonators used to be and have straight pipe running at the tail pipes, the car will sound much more nasty.
not looking for more performance with headers as the car goes like stink as is and i enjoy the stock look of the original manifolds.
i guess i will just goe to a local custom exhaust place that does a lot of muscle cars and hot rods here in town.
i just cant believe there are no companies that make an exhaust were you can bring it home and install everything yourself. :s006:

Flowmaster 40's, will give you what you need. Got them on my 340 and.... Yes! Same setup as, you describe. As soon as I can fund some TTI's, I'll re-install some header's. 'Til then, I'm good with what I have. :D

Patrick, how do the Flowmaster 40's sound? I will be looking for some for my 360 which will then be swapped for the 340. But i love the loud deep burble, not the hard cackle of some mufflers. Do they make them in 3" i wonder? I I am also running an X pipe, so i think the noise factor will be reduced by that anyway. thanks

Dynomax Super Turbo muflers sound nicer in my (and others) opinion.

But both come in various sizes including 3". Even bigger if you want.

The thing t realise though is that any system that is 3" and bigger is going to sound LOUD.

If you want an in-car conversation without having to raise your voice use a system that is 2.5".

OR if you want max performance and you have a big block with headers run a 3" system from the collectors back to the mufflers and then 2.5 from the mufflers over the axle and out.

After working with my exhaust yesterday, I think it would be a tight fit using 3" over the axles. (Between the shock and fuel tank)

The stock tips are 2" so a reducer would need to be considered if they are used with larger pipes.

hi drewcrane,that system looks great.
is it set up for factory exhaust manifolds? as it looks to be set for headers.
what is the size 2+1/2" or more?
what is your price and i guess shipping to canada would be large?
if i dont buy it i am sure someone else can use that nice exhaust system.

yes it is set up for headers, and it is a 3 inch system, and i will let it go cheap as i dont need it,yes shipping will be somewhat heavy but so will a new system and this will be much cheaper overall since tti i think gets over 700 bucks,so anyone out there is interested let me know

Dave, what do you mean by "nicer". I want "nice" too, but how would you describe the sound please? Low, burble, warble, hard, soft...? thanks! I assume they are are straight through type. I think engine setup and cam has a lot to do with it as well. I have heard 350 Chevs sound great with just a pair of the long Hotdog style fitted -a deep loud burble sound.

thanks

No they are not "straight through". Dynomax are similar to Flowmasters but have a deeper more mellow tone than Flowmasters which sound a little harsh to me.

ta for that Dave, i have bookmarked that page, i think i will get those ones!

Drew, thats's a very healthy sounding motor, unfortunately the deficiencies in my cheap computer speakers and possibly your microphone, combined, means i couldn't appreciate the low frequencies of that exhaust note, but i believe!

Eddie, just a question about headers. As you know, the good brands have the extra thick flanges, my TTi's do - and they stretch all along the head, ie its one flange. My Mopar mechanic usually cuts the flanges so that the pipes are seperated at the ports. He does this because he says when tightening up at each port, it allows the pipe to bend slightly and seal better, rather than the small manifold bolts trying to pull the whole stiff assembly as one. He rarely has leaks doing this way. It makes sense to me. What do you think of this? See picture of an example of where he would cut.
Thanks, Steve

That is a good way to seal cheap headers with flanges that can warp. But it is not needed on good quality 3/8 thick flanges.

No way that I would let anyone cut my TTi:s (if I had a set). Well, if I had a problem with them and everything else failed then I might consider it... :? Just my personal opinion.

Steve, I have to agree 100% with both Dave and Chris. I think I would be afraid of the area at the collector 4 into 1 junction would crack and seperate from different heat/cold expansion rates? But to be honest I dont know!

if you use the gasket they come with there is no need to cut them as dave and ed said they are way to thick to bend, i have had mine on and off several times and they still dont leak, the cheaper ones that warp will eventually leak ,and yes maybe your speakers dont do anyjustice for the soound its sounds just as you hear it on my speakers, i think its funny that over 3000 people have watched my car back out of the garage :s024:

Steve:Here is a Top Secret Pic of Team Penske's headers, I think they use individual tubes and each flange is connected to it's own port. But for a Street Car.....if he hasnt had any failures it might help with plug changes and lighten the car by a pound or two.

Sorry. Haven't checked this thread, for awhile. The flowmasters are quiet but, when I open it up.... They say I echo through the Gorge. I kind of like that, though. :p:
That's stock manifold's with custom pipe's w/crossover. Might have to change, if I ever get those TTI, header's.
Might like that too... :p: ! :p: ! :p: !

Use an X-Pipe whatever you do Pat! (10-15 "Free Horsepower") it keeps it 'quiet' until a WOT or high gasses exist, then it sounds a bit throaty but a bit different. MoPar used an H pipe on Hemi cars.

Some of their products are and some not. You can probably see which is which on their website. But I think the super turbo units are reversable. Couldn't swear that though.
They do all sorts of different configurations so you shouldn't need to reverse them anyway.

I am starting to prefer Flowmasters now. Just to be awkward.
