Clutch clutch/Z bar question

Postby charliek » 13 Apr 2009 5:18

The Z bar is sliding toward the left which is not allowing the cloutch to disengage properly. Is thate any way to keep the bar from siding over?
Thanks all

Yes, there might be a lot of play in the ball support that slides into the hollow end that is mounted onto the LHS chassis rail. The photo shows an Ebody one without the ball turret support, the other one is an A body (right hand drive) with the turret installed. I think there is supposed to be a little play either side so the clutch linkage can find its own path because the engine and trans are a little independent of the chassis, in that there is some movement between them. So the chassis mount points have to allow for this movement.

Does that bar not have support at both ends?

I always said the 4-speeds are more bother than they are worth.

There's not supposed to be any play in the ball mounts. Also, don't forget the small clips that lock the Z-bar on the left-side bushing.

yes there is another ball on the bellhousing as well. I thought there would have to be some movement allowed? As the engine/ trans moves around when running and torquing.

that's why i'm using hydraulic setups. Still, its a nice looking mechanical setup for people like me, who like "nice mechanical things". Especially when i bought an entire new bushing, clip, spring kit for the 4 speed.

Seems there was a snap retainer in the bar that holds it in place.

Dave, you auto guys are just plain lazy. Instruction for use as follows:

To go-------- push throttle (to floor).

To stop------ push other petal.

To play------ move slap stick around.

HA! I like these instructions. To make it even simpler, go only in straight lines!
