Pat, sorry I missed your call last night my wife expected me to accompany her to a boring wedding with equally boring people, they dont appreciate cars and the music was country so I didnt go. I lied to her. She found out. I escaped, she was not pleased. The plugs on your beautiful engine look pretty good but you need to take a very close look at the insulator and tip for any "specks" this is aluminum and not carbon. If you dont find any this would be great. Did you brake torque it and see if that sound appears? Your engine looks beautiful and brings back many 340 memories. All good :s003: I'm taking Hershey, my Chocolate Labrador retriever this morning on my walk, then he goes with me to my brothers house. We are gonna listen to Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath today with Rush and AC/DC mixed in for variety! Then we are gonna take the R/T out for a spin. :thumbsup:

My Dauchshund CoCo is 15! She still hunts backyard moles but has no teeth, they fell out as she aged. She goes to the Vet every 6 months for her checkup and to have whats left of her fangs/teeth left cleaned cause she gets infected. 7 lbs. of German terror!!! :biggrin:

My other two dogs both rescued. Dauchshund and Bischon Frise. The Bischon was abused. I threatened the owners and they gave him to me. :mrgreen:

I also have two cats and two birds, a Hamster, and take care of a few more at the store where I work. :mrgreen: Sorry bout the long post. I always had a "soft heart" for our two err four legged critters! :biggrin:

My Billy won 6th place in "best rescue dog" at a show recently. Not bad for such a manky mutt. :D

Man, thats weird Dave! As I was typing the above post my wife started yelling and screaming. I raised my arms to defend myself, I thought she was gonna get physical. Instead, she says,"Hersheys has an animal in his mouth"! I grabbed my digi-cam and went outside to see that he had a mole my Dauchshunds had killed in his mouth! Here is what the little buggers look like! They have no eyes that I can see, but huge claws and razor sharp teeth!

By brake torquing, I think you mean, hitting the gas and braking at the same time. I did this at cruising speed. Didn't hear anything. I didn't see any speck's at all on my plug's. :thumbsup: Just a little carbon. Like I said, the chatter isn't big but, as the RPM's rise, usually W.O.T. or W.F.O., 75MPH+, it chatter's a bit on the increase then subside's. Really enjoyed the pic's of your dog's guy's. Billy look's really proud with that ribbon, Dave. Ryley really is a good shop hand. Wish he knew the difference between SAE and metric though. I think his biggest problem is that, he doesn't know he's a dog. Also, if he doe's know he's a dog, he think's he's a lap dog, not a Lab dog. :roll: That pic with him on my wife was a few year's ago. He's filled out quite a bit since.

OK, thats what I was looking for Pat. Yes, brake torquing or loading the convertor, stepping on the gas at the same time as the brake is applied. This 'test' is to hear if any rattling while the engine is under load. I still think it's the dizzy. In particular the advance mechanism either the springs,(2) or the advance plate is continuing to advance. I re-read the post and missed the part that you stated the dizzy came from a truck correct? If so Pat, you should know that dizzy in trucks dont advance the same as a performance car dizzy. The curve is probably much longer and not as quick to advance as the car dizzy all things being equal. Take it to a shop that can curve it to 12-14 initial, 24 mechanical all in by about 2600-3000 rpm's or close to this curve, it should run much better than and of course safer. Not discovering those specks of aluminum is a very good sign Pat but you should plan on getting that fixed soon. BTW, does changing octane or gasoline quality affect the noise that you hear? My lab looks tiny in my wifes arms. :s017:

Yep. Bob said that the #'s on the Dizzy say it's from a truck. That's why he changed the spring type's when he rebuilt the unit for me. I really didn't care to hear that my dizzy came from a truck but, he assured me that it would be fine. And that he could curve it to my need's. :thumbsup: My car is in his shop right now. I think he'll get this sorted out. I burn Super 92 octane in it. When I add octane boost it hardly chatter's at all. This is with 6 to 8 degree's advanced at idle. I can make the chatter go away altogether but that's setting it at 4 degree's btc. That's no fun. Hurts performence too. :evil:

Pat, the distributor advance plate limits the amount of advance by slots cut into it. You can increase/decrease the advance by enlarging/filling the slots in the plate. The springs control how quick this advance takes place according to RPM's. The truck advance is totally different than what you need. You need more initial and a faster curve. Trucks need little initial and a gradual curve because trucks are ususlly loaded vehicles and take time to reach optimum speed. from what you have told me so far I think the dizzy needs a complete curve set up for it. Once you get it right. That 340 will really impress you man!!! :thumbsup: Tell your man--Good Luck and let us know how it turns out. You may be a FBO candidate. Ask Dave he adores the guy!! :biggrin:

Mine pings just slightly at WOT also Pat. Did the problem arise after the new carb? I'm going to try to jet the detonation away by increasing the secondary mains from 76's to 80's. I will let you know if it makes a difference. Also fresh gas seems to help. Not just a fill-up but a station that get's alot of business/turnover. Go where the Beamers and Porsches fill-up.

I don't know about the 1973 engine but 6-8 BTDC sounds pretty far off for a 340. 10 degrees is the max I can deal with right now. That's with 10.5 to 1 pistons and a fairly mild cam.

Got the car back today. Bob changed my dizzy spring's. Now, I have 12 Degree's,BTC but, only 7 mechanical. My math say's that's 19 advanced curve at 2500-3000 RPM. I dunno. :s008: I'm either calling it quit's for a while, or going Mopar performance. :s006: No pinging what so ever though. :thumbsup: I'll see what kind of good or bad family new's, Bill's I get tomorrow. I'll decide then. :s012: Or maybe, I this will be a good combo. I'm taking it to work tomorrow. 95 Mile round trip. Highway, Freeway, Suburban, Urban. Perfect test drive. :mrgreen: Pat

It was a good test run to work and back. Alway's a better ride with the Challenger than the commuter, Nisson. Run's good with premium fuel. No octane boost, no pinging. I think I've lost another step though. :| I'm almost done playing with this truck Dizzy. What do you guy's think of Mopar Performence Dizzy's. Dave, where was that F.B.O. thread at? I think that was it. I remember by Fat,Bald,&Old. That was funny. :lol:

Pat, some old fat guy named Don at F.B.O. ignition systems makes ignition components for muscle cars. I use a MoPar Performance dizzy. It's OK. It's difficult to adjust the curve, you have to use these plastic 'bushings' to alter the curve. Nothing beats MSD! I use a complete MSD system in my Power Ram 4x4, it's easily adjustable with color keyed springs and aluminum bushings.(The advance plate and springs are on top). Total adjustment time is done in minutes. MSD now makes a digital fully programmable dizzy that 3 wire hook up,(battery + and negative, and + coil side), but it doesnt look stock and thats a pretty big disadvantage to alot of guys. It is however fully 'adjustable" and produces a very hot spark. It can be installed/adjusted in very little time. If I were you though Pat, I would use a M.P. unit. It looks 'similar' to your original stock type. :wink:

Pat, when my old Mopar electronic ignition conversion distributor was reworked by FBO everything came alive. (Including the minor detonation problem.) If I was to do it again I would give Don all my engine specs, carb, cam, heads, etc... then tell him to back down a bit on his recommendation.

BTW, FBO is located in Washington state. Maybe your in your own neighborhood. 8)

I dont think you can go wrong there Pat. Jon's advice! It makes a real difference, as he said it "comes alive" and lets that 340 Scream as it was built to do!!! In 1976 the 340 was so dominant in NHRA Pro-Stock that it was factored three times in one season with Dick Landy as engine builder and Bob Glidden as driver. He won the Championship that year. :thumbsup:

Talked to Don today on the phone. He asked me of all the spec's on my car. I told him what I know. He said he would be conservative about the rest. :thumbsup: Don is a really cool dude! :mrgreen: Know's all about my home town, and about the dude in Carson, who has a whole bunch of junk mopar's. :roll: Not junk, just not what I need. Wouldn't go to him anyway, everything is $^^^. Mostly B-Body stuff 7 mile's up the road from me. Now Don know's all about my engine woe's. :| But, he gonna help me fix it! :D He's custom makin' my stuff right now. Have it in a week or so. 8) Doe's anybody need a Brand new Orange C.U. or a Blaster coil, hardly used? :wink: Pat P.S. Eddie, he said "Hell No!", on the RPM. I would keep em in your trunk in case something fails out on the open road. The orange box will still work with the FBO setup in a pinch.

I knew FBO moved recently, thought it was Washington state. Heck, it's so vast (and beautiful) up there it might as well be. :wink:

I stand by my decision to recommend the eddies rpm AirGap. Is he thinking the Victor single plane? bet he is the old bastard. You can tell him I said that :biggrin: I have the perfect torque test vehicle. A 5000lb. vehicle that uses a 360. It makes way more torque than the cast iron dual plane intake,(At EVERY rpm range down low to rod breaking high revs). all things being equal. is he a big dude?:bonk: :s009: Pat I'll take that blaster coil if you want to sell it. I am going to need an ignition for my mule engine I'm building (512/400 stroker).
