crankshaft pilot bush size

Hi everybody,
Please can anyone tell me if there is only one size of pilot bush used when converting 440 automatic crankshaft to manual crankshaft. My parts supplier has told me that I have got to take the engine out and measure the end of the input shaft; but I want to get the crank ground and the engine assembled all in one weekend.
Grateful for any help,
Adrian.

Edit. Just realised you were talking about the size of the input shaft. So forget below unless you need that info as well.

I would have to look up the input shaft sizes on Google but you could do that yourslf.

Me I'm off to walk the dog and to bed!

Two sizes. All cranks have a hole in the end OK?

Well if it was for an automatic they didn't bother machining it out for the stock bushing. that was only done on manual trans cars.

To make swaps easier they brought out a smaller bushing that will fit straight into an auto crank to save you the machining bit.

However some auto cranks were actually machined for the bearing. So you have to look to be sure.

My advice to anyone doing this conversion is DON'T BOTHER!

It will never work as good as original and even then it is a pain in the butt. I know a couple of people that have done this and then changed back to auto.

Dear Dave
Thank's for your reply. I must apologize for not giving you all the information and you appear to have gone to a great deal of effort to help me.
My car is already a manual, a 4 speed, and I am just assembling a 440 my freind has given me. My current engine is a very sick puppy, in fact you gave me a lot of help a couple of month's ago, and I am dropping this one in while I while I work out what I want to do with my own engine.
I've checked out the crank, it's cast, and has been machined for a pilot bush, although my vernier's are'nt long enough to accurately measure the hole.
When I last read your message I noticed you are in Newcastle and I often ride up to the East coast, Bamburgh, Lindisfarne, it's beautiful
Sorry to bore you with my long winded reply, but I really appreciate your effort's.
Thank's again, Adrian.

That pdf file is still on offer if you want it. Just give me your current email address and I will send it. You will probably find it useful.

PS
Be careful on that Lindisfarne causeway. 5 cars have been caught by the tide this year already! It's an expensive way to get a helicopter ride.

Sorry but the file size is too big for your ISP. That is what the problem is.
Owned by Tiscali by the looks of it.
