Belt Tossing.

Postby Tim » 22 Feb 2007 12:42

I took the 'old gel' out for a 10 minute spin at the weekend.

It drove fine after not being started for two months, then threw the fan belt off as soon as I put the power on. This is the third or fourth time in a row it's happend. I can drive for miles without incident, then hoof it and the fan belt flies off. :x

Is it alingment? I keep relocating the fanbelt back on the middle pulley underneath. This looks like it lines up ok.

Any ideas guys?

Tim I would guess it is either not tight enough or your pulleys are not lined up as well as you think they are.

Stick a hammer handle between the water pump housing and the alternator and lever it out as you tighten the adjuster.

Of course if it is too tight it will kill the alternator pulley bearing but you can go pretty tight before that happens. A 5lb load should only deflect the belt at mid-point by 3/16ths.

Why are you not at work today anyway? You had better not be throwing a sicky? :s021:
