It's a 440. That is all you need to know.

Looks like the date is 1977.

There were two different compressions that year. 9.12:1 and 8.60:1. It will also have a cast crank.

But those late blocks are very good blocks and great base material for a performance engine.

If you want a good block why not buy my mate Trevors block as advertised on the MMA message board? It is as good as you can get. It just needs a cam and heads to finish it off and I know a guy that has two 906 heads for sale cheap.

Well there were only the two versions I mentioned made that year.

The lower compression one was used by Plymouth and Dodge.

The higher compression one was used by them and Chrysler as well.

There is no way to tell what vehicle it came from. Unless you can match the VIN to a particular car. Also remember many motor homes used this engine too. But it really does not matter.

They all had the Carter TQ carb and the good 452 heads.

My best guess is that it is a very early 1978-block but I am far from sure.

8C124018 gives me 1978.

It is just possible it was used in a August built 78 model but the engine was built June 1977 if that is a date stamped there (which I think it is).

In any case. The first letter in "7-440-E" is the year code for 1977, followed by the engine's displacement. The year code was sometimes also stamped as a letter which in this case would be a "N".

I think the "E" just means cast crank.

Pretend that it was built on the 27th of June, 1977. Can´t you call it production year 1978 then?

August 77 is the start of the 78 production year.
