The Dodge Challenger Message Board

My husband just bought '74 Challenger and we are pretty clueless about making repairs. We noticed a strong fuel smell and checked under the hood to find a small puddle of fuel that had leaked out. I don't know the names of the the parts under the hood, but we tightened the bolt that appeared to be leaking, but it still leaks. I'm afraid to go to a mechanic because I don't want to get ripped off when they find out how clueless we are. We have only lived in California for a few months and don't anyone that can help. If you have any thoughts on what we could try or what the cause could be, please let me know. Also, any info. on adjusting carbs. would be helpful. The car came from Tennessee and apparently because of the difference in elevation, we are supposed to adjust it.

Need to know exactly where it is leaking and what bit you tightned. Any chance you could take a photo with your finger on the offending bit so we can see what it is?

Is it just me, or would anyone elses advice to someone who doesn't have either
A. any mechanical knowledge or practical skills, or
B. lots of money to throw away, be to avoid classic cars like the plague.

Depends on your point of view. I haven't got any of either (ask anyone who knows me ), but you can learn as you go if you've got a bit of perseverance and people willing to share their knowledge. As for money, well, we always manage to find it somewhere.....
