I have a stock 1970 Challenger RT with the 383 4bbl with a remanufactured Carter carb (not original) and car won't pass emissions and idles rough. My mechanic says the carb needs rebuilding, so I am considering purchasing a rebuilt carb on eBay. Any suggestions on a replacement carb (Holley or otherwise). I would like to keep the electric choke. Thanks!

There is not much to rebuild on these carbs. They don't have a million gaskets and o-rings like Holleys. Just one major gasket. Chances are it just wants a clean and putting back together. Maybe it just needs tuning. Are you sure your mechanic knows how to tune carbs correctly? By tuning I don't just mean turn the idle mixture screws. The carb may be set up for a bigger or hotter engine.
We have pages of instructions on rebuilding these carbs here on this message board. Have a look at them. You might find it is a lot easier than it looks.
If it is too rich at idle the floats for the fuel level in the carb could be out of adjustment or you might have too much fuel pressure. Something silly like that.
Of course a weak ignition system will also give you the symtoms you describe.

Where can I find the information on rebuilding the carb? Not sure how to locate it on the site. Thanks.

There is a search facility on the board found by clicking one of the tabs just under the challenger message board title.
