Postby Marbury » 10 Jun 2005 0:41

i just got through putting in the new engine and i have a 3 inch flowmaster exhaust with brand new Hooker Headers but they sit literally 2 inches off the ground and where i live the roads are horrible. anyway i was wondering if there is anyway around this or do i just have to bite the bullet and get new headers?

Nope have to get new ones, hookers hang the worst. If you really have the money for it, you should get a set of TTI headers (http://www.ttiexhaust.com/)best set you can buy for your mopar.

I just finished putting a TTI 2.5 inch exhaust system - complete from headers to tips - in my Challenger. I had one issue with the fit around the passenger side torsion bar, but other than that, they just bolted right in and fit great. Their phone support is pretty good, and their website has the necessary modifications listed so you can refer to them as well. The modification they say you have to do to the kick-down linkage must apply to the four-barrel linkage. My six-pack linkage cleared everything and they were correct - my console-shift linkage cleared as well. Remember, all they do is MOPAR.

I agree with Jack-T.
I also have new TTI headers to Flow Master mufflers.
No problems. Sounds nice. You won't be disappointed.

The Hooker headers in my 70 340 sit low and are in need of replacement due to flattening by speed bumps.

I am looking at TTI and am wondering if anyone has a preference on the finish. The nickle chrome coating holds up well on my 2 stroke dirt bike but the heat factor is relitively low. Is it worth the extra money for the ceramic coated? How do they look after a few years?

Without the ceramic coating they will have rusted through and need replacing in a couple of years. Depending on how much use the car gets of course. So if you want them to last you don't really have a choice unless you get some stainless steel ones made?

Thanks for responding Dave. Now the next questions are if the thermal barrier coating and the polished ceramic finish are worth while. How do yours look after use?

Thanks again,

Jon

I have not got any. Yet! But i don't care how it looks because the only other option for a thermal barrier (and boy do you need a thermal barrier) is header wrap and they rot headers twice as fast as normal. My wrapped hedman headers lasted two or three years before blowing apart?

Basically it is the best choice no matter which way you look at it. The only factor is cost.

Yes, as always cost is a factor in my relm. I remember when Headman Headers were $39.95 and hookers were $150! (back in 1980) Had both. The Headmans lasted about 2 years so I splurged and bought the Hookers only to be disappointed. These days it seems Headman has up-ed old standards for quality.

No offense Dave, but has anyone else out there had notable results with the TTI units? I also have heard about Sanderson exhaust systems ????

Thanks

I had the 2 inch coated and polished from tti, for my 44o , had everything mounted and installed on the k member, lowered the body down and had everything in place, left torsion bar fit perfectly no mods to kickdown or steering interference as advertised. slid the right side in and hit on the collector and missed the hole in the lower control arm by3/4 of an inch. Called tech assistance and they wanted to blame it on mis aligned body or incorrect motor swap.... sent then proof of alignment and all their measurments of crank bolt height from k member and side to side clearence , matched their dimensions perfectly.... pulled motor/trans/ suspension assym back out and boxed them up and sent them back. they claim that those pipes had no problems but suggested I go with the 1 7/8 set as it is routed differently or they would send the 2inch back and I could pound a dent in the collector to make them fit. Didnt seem right for high dollar mopar specialist brand not to mention it would jepordize the coating. The 1 7/8 fit great but i have not started the motor yet so my opinion is only of fit and customer service. I asked for the inconvience if they would send along an h pipe to make up for the delay and time wasted, they claim they were losing too much because they would have to have the old 2 inch pipes re coated and polished because of all the shipping and install they got a little mark in them... boo hoo,, :s005:

even with all that i have too say they look mean just sitting still :V8:

I have seen lots of cars with the 1 7/8ths fitted. I also have several friends that have fitted them and all look good and fit well.

A couple of months ago I was looking at a set of 2" pipes on a 440 '68 Coronet. The owner said they fitted fine but looking at them and the tight fit around the spark plugs I wondered if the extra 1/8th was worth the hassle?

When these TTI pipes came out I reasoned that even if the Hedmans only lasted a couple of years it would be cheaper just to keep replacing them as you could get several sets of Hedmans for the cost of one set of TTIs.

Well after lots and lots of hassle keeping the Hedmans sealed to the heads (including having to re-weld and hand file the flanges level) I have come to the conclusion i would rather pay the extra and have less hassle. I'm getting too old for this shit.

I thought the same. :s008: Replace the headers every couple of years probably 5-10 in my case. Don't think the new ones would fit exactly as the old so welding on the the tail section could be required. And this is not my idea of fun either. :disbelief:

Sounds like TTI needs a little attention too detail if they don't fit properly. The Sanderson units I mentioned earlier were installed on a friends perfectly restored El Camino. They are expensive also and required the same "dent" to clear. He lost points in show due to this. :rage: Not that mine is a show car but a $700 pair of headers should fit perfect and look good for a long time.

Thanks,

Jon

How much more clearance do you get through the TTI headers compared to the Hooker or headman headers?

I just installed the TTI headers and X-pipe exhaust system on my Challenger, everything fit great. Only issue I had was I needed 6* offset collectors to keep the headers from being to low (due to the Keisler 5-speed) which I had told them about when I ordered but they failed to send. Called tech and they sent the part right out. CA to VA in 3 days.
