Carburettors

Hi all,
As promised recently some info on the overhaul of my car will be coming soon, but in the meantime I have a question...
My 340 motor has Edelbrock performer heads and intake manifold newly fitted along with some free flow headers, problem is the old Holley carb now seems to run very rich.
Rather than spend time and money on getting it tuned and rejetted my thought was to buy a new Edelbrock carb which might come close to being matched to a small block fitted with the other Edelbrock bits and only need a bit of fine tweaking, how realistic is this ?
I read recently that the 500cfm performer is suited to the small block motors...I realise that the cam comes into the equation but only know that mine is either standard or at most mild.
Any useful suggestions anyone?
Many thanks
Antony

I had good luck the Thunder Series AVS 650 with the electric choke. Was easy to tune, and the cold starts were good as well. When you get the itch to put a heavy cam in, you can adjust the carb to your needs!

Ps

If you put a high pressure fuel pump in, don't forget the fuel regulator...

I wouldn´t choose a smaller carb than 600 cfm, if I was you. That decision is more based on feelings than anything else. I know that it is quite common that people over-carburate their engines but, as I said, I think that your 340" can cope with a 600 carb.

600cfm for a stock or mild engine. 750cfm for a hotter version that will rev over 5500rpm

Time and money tuning a carb? An afternoons work for a fraction of the cost of a new carb.

Thanks for this guys, part of the reasoning is that the Holley I have on my car is pretty old anyway and the nearest tuning guy to me charges in the region of 120 quid !
I think I'll go for the 600 cfm as suggested with manual choke.
The Holley hasn't even got a choke connected but has never failed to start with a quick pump on the gas before turning the key, even in the depth of last winter.
It seems to me that the cheapest way to get an Edelbrock carb is direct from Year One ?
I had some stuff sent from them recently and I phoned about it on the Monday afternoon and received the parcel on Thursday morning...not bad going.

Here are a few places where Edelbrock suggests that you can shop online. Hopefully they are smart enough to ship to the UK.
