Fumes in the car

Has anybody else had problems with fumes entering their car? When I accelerate quickly the car fills with fumes and it's driving me crazy. It only happens with the windows open, which suggests to me it is being sucked in from somewhere. I've checked the exhaust system from front to back and no leaks. I'm wondering if it is being drawn in from the trunk. Any ideas?

There is so much drag on these cars the exhaust gets sucked into the windows if they are open.

It is worse if you are burning a bit of oil or if you are using headers that are leaking at the head flange a bit.

One thing you can check is that it is not fumes from the PCV system on the engine. Make sure the PVC system is functioning correctly and the fumes from the valve cover are being sucked into the carb.

Also check that you have a cowl seal and that is functions. This stops engine fumes entering the airbox in front of the dash.

another (bad news) possibility is blow by, on my car this was due to 2 broken piston rings, of course there isn't any reason why this should be worse when the windows are open...I drove round for a long while with a piece of rubber tubing jammed into the breather and down and out under the offside wheel arch, and then it was worse with the window open....whenever the car was stationary :s024:
