OK Dave, I have read your article on tuning carbs. I have the 73 challenger 340 6 pack, hot cam. I finally got the timing and the fuel in real good shape. The next problem is that when driving normally (which is no fun) the car runs great. When you step into it and let it rip the car does good until the other 2 carbs join in. Then it sticks at a high rpm, since you are the resident expert on carbs, could the float bowls or linkage be getting stuck? I have not tried just undoing them and run only the main carb.

What shape are the secondary vacuum diaphrams in and is the linkage set right so the outers can open fully and get pulled closed when you back off?

When the diaphrams start to perish they go a a bit miss shaped instead of being nice and tight across the surface.
That can cause problems opening and closing.

The linkage on the drivers side should pull the secondaries closed though if they are tending to stick so usually a problem with the diaphrams only shows as an opening problem.

I have just had a curry washed down with plenty of beer so this will probably not make sense in the morning.

makes sense. I don't beleive it is the diaphragms as it opens just fine.

When it sticks open even if you let off the pedal it continues to run to high of rpm's to the point it will blow the motor. Then when it does this you shut it of and put it in nuetral(4 speed) to coast to a stop. it shuts off ok, when you re-start the car it is back to normal again. we drove the car for 2 weeks without any problems and then all the sudden it started doing this. It has got to be in the carb or linkage doesn't it? a clutch wouldn't do this?

'm not sure what a curry is, but the beer sounds pretty good. It is about beer 30!

Ah! That is a better description of the problem.

Yeah the linkage is there to pull the outer carbs closed when you let off the throttle cable. Otherwise manifold vacuum (which opens the outers) will keep them open.

So if it was OK before then the linkage mush have dissconnected. You should adjust it so that the outers are allowed to open fully when the center is open max (just pull them open with the engine not running and look down into them to check) and then make sure that as the center carb closes it pulls the outers with it and they all end up closed together.

A curry is a spicy Indian meal.

Thanks dave I wil try that. does anyone have specific info on the 6 pack carb set-up? your article on carbs is very informative and I have seen other post where the adjustments on the outer 2 carbs are underneath a dummy plug on the bottom of the carb. more specific is there a manual for 6 packs available. I will look at them and see what i can determine although the center one is the one with the butterfly, I guess by what you are saying I can look in the other 2 and see them open and closed? I'm not sure how the adjustment works on the linkage just have to play with it a little bit.
