Mystery Engine Stamping...

Hello All,

I was looking at a 318 in a '73 Challenger the other day that had an extra number stamped below the factory serial number. The factory serial number was PM318R. Unfortunately the date code and sequence code beside this was obscured with heavy paint and I couldn't make it out. Below (not beside) this, in larger numbers and stamped much harder (easier to see) was 42144.

I'm thinking this extra stamping is not original - perhaps a rebuilder putting their own code on the block? Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Allan

There is a lot of variation in the way the small block numbers are stamped on. They vary from plant to plant and year to year I think.

Sometimes part of the serial number is stamped below the rest. Most likely it is either the build date (sometimes using the 10,000 day calendar) or the engine production number. I have heard other numbers can be found stamped on or near there too but I don't know anyone who knows what they mean. It could be a case of the latter.
