Worn lobe and lifter

I just took the cam out of the 70 Challenger R/t I just bought , one lobe is round and the lifter is dished.What would cause this to happen? Should I look at the valve for sticking or a broken spring?The push rod looks ok.The cam is a Crane CCH 302-2.The car was a bracket racer that I`m putting back on the street. Thanks.

If it wasent broken in correctly this could happen, to big of valve springs could do this to I think, not sure though.

Yeah that is correct. But it can also be a badly worn lifter bore .

However I have seen two MP cams this year that did that for no reason at all. We figured they were just badly made.

Will I have to worry about metal fragments in the engine or would the filter get most of it?

Depends, pull the pan if you can and see if there is any in there.

I know from experience that an oil filter does NOT catch the metal from a failed cam. Your bearings and oil pump have suffered from eating this metal and should be replaced. The engine ideally should be completely dissassembled and cleaned. You can also just stick in another cam and lifters and Keep your fingers crossed. Depends on how radical the engine is and what you're willing to risk in the future.
