440 swap engine mounts

Postby zerngl » 24 Aug 2004 13:47

Well despite everyones advice, I made the plunge and bought a 440 and 727 from the junk yard. I have a machine shop to build the short block and port the heads after I pull everything apart. We will need to bump up the pistons becuase the 440 is out of a 78 wagon with low compression. The 727 has no reverse but was the only one I could find. Another project. My question is this. I know I will need to swap motor mounts in my small block (318) challenger and can find big block mounts at Summitt for $25. I look in year one and it has motor mounts made for a swap at $128 each and says you don't need to change the K frame. Do I need these special motor mounts or will the stock mounts made for a big block in a Challenger work fine?
Thanks

Gary

Try http://www.engine-swaps.com/ they have everything you need including a how to and planning guide.

You may also want to start a little research into:

New torsion bars
New drive line
New or rebuilt 3rd member
Radiator
Alt/power steering bracket(s)

Sounds like you have a hobby to keep you busy, and take care of any spare $$ you have lying around.

Have fun..

Just for the record. All V8 Challengers used the same K-frame. There were different part numbers for some 440 and all 426 engines but this was because of the skid pan welded onto these frames.

So your 318 k-frame will be fine. You just need the correct engine mounts. Not just the rubber pad bit but the whole assembly.

BTW if your engine is out of a dodge or plymouth it will have 8.5:1 compression which is perfect for procharging!

The chrysler version seems to have had less power but more compression?

Good news is you will have the best heads for the job. The '452' heads have hardened valve seats for unleaded fuel and flow as good as any stock performance 440/400/383 head.
