What stops the cam from walking in a 440. When I pulled the cover adn the timing set off of my supposedly un touched 440 I did not find a cam button or anything. Should there be a cam button in there and mine is missing?

I know Mopar BB's do not have anything to retain the cam from moving forward. I think the forces in the motor want to pull the cam into the block when it's running. Unlike a chevy which wants to spit it's cam out the front.

On mopar BB engines the helical cut gear that drives the intermediate oil pump helical cut gear remain in mesh as long as the distributor is bolted down. Helical cut gears create end thrust. While the engine is running the cam is forced rearward in the block by this action, no other endthrust retention/control is required ie; cam button unless a "roller type" lifters are utilized. Stock flat tappet lifters, hydraulic or solid will not require a thrust button.
