Engine Mod

Postby 287 » 04 May 2004 21:06

I have a 73 challenger, plain janer, it has a 318 and I would like to equip it with fuel injection. I think we can all agree that the 73 challengers aren't the most prized of the fleet, so I dont mind modifying it a bit. I would like to get around 300 horse out of it. What fuel injection kit would be best, and what other engine mods would I have to do to reach my hp goal? I am interested in keeping it as a good cruising car with good horsepower. Any suggestions would be appreciated, and thanks for the forum, this is great!!!

300hp is easy to get from a 318. I will plug some numbers into Desktop Dyno and see what comes up.

An aftermarket fuel injection setup is very expensive. Seems a lot of money to spend on a 318. But if you really want injection I think the aftermarket stuff is the easier route. The kind you set up with a laptop is best. Otherwise you may as well just run a carb. Actually when you weigh up benifits to cost you are better off with the carb on the 318 anyway.

Fitting an injection setup from a late model car of truck is possible too but way beyond my knowlege and experience.

I will work out a parts list for your 300hp.

I have worked out a package for you that gives 280hp @ 4500rpm and 376lbs of torque @ 3000rpm which is a very streetable package that will run on stock axle gears and a stock convertor (if it is an automatic).

Is that enough or do you want more power? If you want more you will have to use lower gears in the axle and a higher higher stall convertor.

Do you want me to plug the numbers in or do you want to stick there and I will list the parts?
