Many of our Challengers have had engine swaps over the years. In particular a lot have been fitted with 440s ranging from 1966 closed chamber versions to 1978 motor home powerplants. Trying to find out exactly where your engine (or some of the parts used on it) may have come from can be difficult.

I will reproduce here some of that reference material I have for you.

Dave, If you remember last month when I was decoding the 1970 R/T Hemi-Challenger, I received digital pictures in the mail from my friend. On one of the pictures of the block you can see a casting number of 2468330-1. According to information on the board, this block was cast up to 1971. However, on the other side of the block it has a casting date that shows 5-10-74. Did Chrysler make replacement blocks in 1974 with this casting number. I will see the car next week but for know I'm going by the pictures. Thanks, Patrick

I believe that was the case but i can't find any written proof in my notes or in my books.

The hemi was not offered in new cars after the 1971 model year but I guess they still had to supply parts to repare or replace every car they made including the hemis.

It matters not really. It is still a hemi car. Many were built so badly they had to be replaced under warranty so it is not unusual and not always a sign they were raced. In fact I suspect that a lot of 'numbers matching' hemis out there have had the numbers stamped on the block at a later date....

You worry too much! Go get it!

Thanks for worrying about my worrying. I'm not really concerned whether the block was original or not. I just found it interesting that all documentation showed production ended in 1971. Thanks for replying again Dave. Patrick
