engine selection for a 1973 project

Postby 161 » 27 Jan 2004 23:18

I have a 1973 Challenger that originally came with the Ralley Package it even has the factory 340 stickers under the hood, however, it is a 318 car, and the 318 numbers match the vin, fender tag and the build sheet. I have had this car since 1976, drove it until 1981, and it has been garaged since. This car has minimal rust or body problems and in the early 1980's, anticipating problems down the road, I purchased NOS trim and have save it, still in the shrink wrap. It is now time for a restoration.

I've been considering several different engine swaps and am soliciting suggestions or comments.

What would you do?!

If I wanted something stock looking I would build a 400+inch stroker short block with ported iron heads and make it look like the 318.

If I was not concerened about looking stock I would either do the same, but use Edelbrock heads, headers and a bigger cam.

OR I would do that plus fit a procharger.

Or I would build a 450-500 inch big block based on a 400-inch engine and do either of the last two above.

So many paths to walk and so little time and money to do it!
