Distrubutor driveshaft bushing

Postby Jack T (Jackt) » 01 Sep 2003 19:10

I have partially assembled the 440 HP2 for my R/T SE and had to stop with the oil pan, timing chain cover, oil pump, heads, lifters, push rods and rocker arms all installed. The problem is that the new bushing for the distributor and oil pump drive shaft is undersized and has to be replaced. Other than the public flogging for the machine shop, what steps do I take to extract the wrong bushing without removing anything I've done so far?

Tap it and use a slide hammer?

Is it possible to put something up the oil pump drive passage and knock it out from below???

Tapping it is out of the question because of the metal chips and I'm not very happy with the idea of removing anything I have completed and painted, but if the oil pump has to come off, I guess it does. I will be collecting the correct bushing and a new oil pump gasket from the machine shop for sure.

Didn't think you would like the tapping idea. Image

I have had another think about it but can't come up with any ideas. Sorry!

Wondering how you finally got around this problem Jack.

Mopar Action just printed a photo of the two tools for the job. Looks like I was not far wrong with one of my guesses.

One tool self taps into the bush and seats itself into the distributor hole. You then tighten a nut down to draw the bush out. The other tool drives the new bush in and burnishes the bushing to size.

Easy when you know how eh?
