Correct Gas Cap?!

Postby Dennis Almeida (Denalm) » 19 Jul 2003 12:00

Hello all, my first time posting, I have been veiwing the board for quite a while. My experience in restoring is limited but my love for Challengers isn't. My problem is I purchased a cap from someone on Ebay and they claimed it fit my 74 Challenger Rally. It fits perfectly in the opening, but it does not tighten down when you twist it. It is chrome finish. Are there different profiles of the lock down insert of the gas caps. This appears to be too tall and the gasket is very worn. Any help would be appreciated.

Correct Gas Cap?!

I have not seen a chrome gas cap. The 74's had a painted to match cap. The cap I bought on ebay was a little beat up; I had to make a new gasket, using the old one as a template. Had to bend the tabs that go under the filler ring a little to. Yours might not be for a challenger?

Let's see if the Guru of Challenger can shed a little more light? Dave?

Todd probably just gave you the information you need. Just because it doesn't tighten is probably more related to the gasket, because it did, after all, fit.

I have a chrome gas cap on my 1971 which I bought in 1979. I assumed it was correct, but I've been told that they all came with body color caps, and the chrome ones were from Mopar when the original one was lost. Hence it could, if correct, explain why you see both. Chances are pretty strong that you have the right part, but the gasket needs the work.

Most filler caps back then used the same fitment no matter what car it came off so I suspect it is a wear or damage problem. jeff is right. The chrome caps were Mopar replacement.

I made a gasket for mine out of a radiator cap seal. Very simple.
