Oil Pan Recommendations?

Postby Todd Hall (Insuranceguy) » 15 Jul 2003 23:36

The Crate motor I have came with an 8 qt oil pan, that's gonna a be a little to deep. I would like to have a higher capacity oil pan, but am going to need a little more clearance. Any ideas?

You could make the bottom wider yourself so it does not have to be so deep if you can weld.

You could also use a stock oil pan and do what the Mopar Action team did and fit a Moroso Accumulator (available from Summit) but with an electronic valve on the end that opens it whenever you turn the ignition on - giving you instant oil pressure before the engine has even fired!

Wouldn't that be a smart idea for everyone who has a car that gets started in cold temps? Is it hard to put in, or does it detract greatly from a car's showing?

You just plumb it in with an adapter that goes behind the filter or in line with a cooler. It comes in different sizes but it would not be easy to hide out of sight.

The thing works by filling with oil when the engine is running and the oil under pressure. The oil pressure pushes back a piston in the accumulator as it fills. Then if for any reason you loose pressure in the system (like high gees pulling oil away from the pick-up in the sump) the spring loaded piston pushes oil back out to keep the system at full pressure.

If you fit a electronic valve in line with it then it stops the accumulator draining when you switch off. When you switch back on again it pressurises the system before you start. A great bit of kit.

Dave,

Did Mopar Action write a tech article on this topic?

Yes. They covered it in the "Green Brick" write-ups.
