Clevite 77 and Federal Mongul are pretty close. The I cannot remember which was the better. I just looked at them last night even too. Man, 21 and my mind is already going, gees. The high performance ones are for one or the other is for 74 to 98 and 01 318's. It shouldn't matter should it, since I have a 72 318, as long as it is stock, right?

Tri-metal or the steel backed alumminum? How about the bearings with the babbit surface? Have you heard of the bearings with a slicker surface coating?

I don't know much about them. I have the good Federal Mogal bearings in mine I think but I would have to check with the bloke that put my long block together for me.

I check Summit racing equipment, I am not able, according to their online catalog, to get Clevite 77 main bearings for my engine, but I can for my cam bearings. Federal Mongul, at least in their discription that they gave, seems best out of the two brands, but Federal Mongul is also more expensive than Clevite 77.
