hi dave, just been giving a lot of thought in the direction of planning my engine hop up, it looks like i will be going with the huges he1423bl i like the look of the he2330bl but it starts to get into porting and gearing changes which will cost alot more dosh, also what do you think would be a good choice of carb size wise,will 600 cfm do or will i need bigger? also have you any experience with eldelbrock carb throttle link up's, do they fit up properly? as i hate lash ups in this dept, where as the carter carbs supply an adapter to fit them to chrysler motors thanks trev

I used a 750 Edelbrock and a slightly hotter than stock crane cam in my car when I first got it and it ran very well. No linkage problems that i recall. I used an electric choke which did not come as standard with my carb for some reason.
I would never use anything smaller on a 440. The 383 of course is a bit smaller but I personally think a 600cfm is too small. A 650 would be OK i guess but i am sure the 750 edelbrock will work well on your car too. I can help you tune it if you have trouble. With that 1432 cam and that carb tuned well you should get canny mileage bonnie lad.

Hi trev l run a 750 Edelbrock on my 71 see pics and got a adapter kit from real steel for throttle linkage and when l had it up and running was returning over 22 mpg at a steady 70 and that was out of the box with supplied metering needles, and running electronic ignition, still have std 323 gears...

dear mickey mouse i cant belive i just wrote that ha!ha! that sounds good to me i was a little concerned that too big a carb would cause problems at low to mid speeds, but 22 mpg is well good, i also have 323 gearing, all i want from my car is to breathe a little better and add a bit of zip!when i put my foot down without any bogs or holes

dave, are edelbrock and carter carbs made by the same people? just out of interest like, also would it be wise to go for the edbk inlet manifold instead of the mopar version or are they about the same performance wise? i noticed that huges dosent sell the mopar dual plane for some reason,

The MP stuff that has been recently designed is good. But that dual plane is old hat.

Carter went bust or something. Then edelbrock got the moulds or something and turned out a version almost exactly the same. Then weber bought what was left of carter and they brought the old carter carbs out again. Then he turned out to be his half sisters cousin etc etc.

hi guys, gonna start ordering parts for my 383 intake, as my old 2bbl bogs all the time coz the accelerator pump dont work no mo! going for the edlbk performer manifold #2618 and 750 cfm carb #1407, what i would like to know is has any one fitted these items to a 70 challenger with a flat non air scooped hood and did you run into any clearance problems? any info would be gratefully recieved thanks, trev p.s just read old thread about manifold and 2bbl to 4bbl carb swap, the guy waynejody needed a different throttle cable bracket, which type fits properly to do the job?

You will have no hood clearance problems. I don't know if you need a different cable bracket or not but if you do the standard 4bbl bracket will be the one.

cheers dave, it's great to be back on the message board properly, it's a really good to have all this help at the press of a button, and to feel part of something good, as yet i have to phone my depot on the 20th to remind them i'm still in the uk, then on the 22nd they will tell me if i have to return or not! hope i make the nationals this year man, also will give mr watts a ring about a bracket to-morrow thnx again trevImage

just a note I bought a remanufactured edelbrock carb it has a edelbrock sticker on the front of the carb and weber stamped on the side. the reman carb was cheaper and came from edelbrock looking brand new. I bought it through summit auto. They had all the parts I wanted in stock and I had them within 5 days at very good prices.

Weber took over Carter at one point. I don't know if Weber or Carter have anything to do with Edelbrock or not?

The new Edelbrock models have adjustable opening rates on the secondaries. These are the ones I would go for.

I just looked at the intake you have selected. I think you have made the right choice. The Performer will be spot on for the cam you are thinking of at the start of this thread.

I just compared the Edelbrock cam with the Hughes 1423 cam. The Hughes is much better.

INT: 0.470" lift 260 advertised duration
EXH: 0.504" lift 270 advertised duration

The Edelbrock "Performer Plus" cam only gives you 0.420 and 0.442 lift with 270 and 280 degrees advertised duration.

I would expect (just an educated guess) a 60hp gain over the whole rpm range with the Hughes cam/Edelbrock Performer intake combination compaired with your current set-up.

hi dave just thought i'd let you know that i have installed the manifold and carb to my car, when i diasembled the manifold there were no gaskets around the valley pan! well the installation went well for the most part but hooking up the throttle linkage was a bit of a pain i got another bracket off duncan which is what i used in the end but i still need a correct bracket off a 4bbl set up, also my one piece kickdown rod now does not work, i looked in my manuel and i think i need a 3 piece rod for it to work properly, maybe its just an adjustment but it looks like it will hit against the back of the head if i try to adjust it further, will try to se you later this week if thats ok bye for now trev

You don't need gaskets around the valley pan Trev. It is the gasket. You just need a bit of red hermitite around the ports and the edges.

We will have to have a good look in my shed and see if we can find my old braket.
