I disassembled top of my 440 (looking for strange noises from engine in rapid acceleration) and I found that rocker arms on rocker shaft have about 0.04” (1mm) of play – difference between rocker shaft diameter and hole in rocker arm. I have hydraulic cam and standard rocker arm assembly.
Should they be snug on the shaft and if not what kind of clearance is allowed?

I can't find any specifications for allowable play between rocker and rocker shaft. However that does sound a little 'loose' to me.

It could be that the shafts have been installed upside down or back to front which will cause oiling problems and excessive wear. You had better check that.
