I'm changing the engine in my 72' Rallye. The new engine is one of 2. 426 hemi or Viper v10. They cost about the same. On the hemi I can use my current gearbox (727). The question is can I use the 727 on the v10? If not does any one have a price for a gearbox that fits the v10

If your 727 was fixed to the back of a small block V8 originally then may but I don't know so someone else will have to advise you on that.

The whole V10 thing is not an easy job.

Do yourself a favour and go to Ray Barton for a Hemi. It will be an easy fit and make more power.

Looks like a lot of trouble to go through for a heavy cast iron truck engine that will never make as much power as a Hemi that drops right in place. Each to his own I guess. If you have the time on your hands and the money to burn.

Nope, I can't find reference of a ciper motor either, however, Ola sez about fitting a Viper motor, Dave then mentions a "heavy cast iron truck engine" in his usual tongue in cheeck manner, I was having fun with a guy I know is all, so chill out!

This car was a 318 Plum Crazy Purple car from Wisconsin. It had rusted so badly that the car dropped on the ground when the doors were opened. I purchased it in 1997 in many pieces and rebuilt the car during winter of 1998 by using a solid donar car. I grafted the necessary sheet metal to the convertible, (much sheet metal), installed frame connectors, installed a 1994 Ram V10 engine and transmision complete with wiring harness and computer, (the computer and wires are from a 1996)

I know that dude.

Seems the guy had to move the radiator support frame forward as well as cut out the trans tunnel and make a new larger version. OK the Viper engine is a good engine and pretty light but a hemi with ally heads is not far behind and makes more power for a lot less hassle.

If you are that keen on doing metal work and want something a little different then fine. Why not go the whole hog and fit a Rolls Royce V24? It's not that much bigger than the Viper V10. Makes more power than a hemi!

I was looking at an old V24 Spitfire engine the other day and it is physically not as big as you might think. OK this one was a little shorter because it had ploughed into the beach up the road from where I live during WW2! But there was a car over here in the UK running one in the 1970's and early '80s. I think it works out at 1525 cubic inches. Yes you read that right. That's 25 litre. I think it made 2000hp in it's supercharged form?

Neat looking engine with its overhead cams etc. A little thirsty on fuel though.

The Merlin:

12 cylinder 60deg. V engine with 6.0:1 comp ratio

Bore 5.4" stroke 6.0" = 1649 cu.in or 27 litres

All alloy construction, forged crank, forged ally pistons

SOHC per bank, 4 valves per cylinder

Single updaught S.U. Carb, 2 stage supercharger, boost control with fuel injection direct into supercharger

horse power range from 1440 in the MK111 to over 1700 in the xx ( reno air race engines have been known to make in excess of 4000 hp!)

Not a typo. I am always getting that wrong. Don't know why.

Anyway. This one I was looking at (actually there were several but all dug out of the beach or pulled out of the sea so rather damaged) was in the entrance to the little museum at the end of Bamburgh Castle. The valve covers were missing so you could see the overhead cams and their little gear drives etc. It looked very modern really. It also did not look as physically long as I had imagined. Not a bad power to weight ratio. With a modern induction I am not surprised they make a lot of power. I would quite fancy using them in a LSR car if I was looking to break the wheel driven record.

BTW did you know that the wheel driven record (over the flying mile of course) on British soil was only a bit over 200mph? Mmmm.

Hmmm the ray barton hemi looks nice. about 840 hp should be enough. but will that engine hold? and what is the price of one....

The quality of ray bartons work is legendary. Anyone who knows anything about Pro Stock or the Hemi knows the reputation this guy has. Quite simply you will never own a better built engine.

Yes he is not cheap. The best never is. But the engines are built like swiss watches. And they are built to last.
