Gas tank removal

Postby Troy Dieter (Tkdieter) » 25 Aug 2002 2:09

I have a 1973 Challenger, that I have tried several times to patch a couple of leaks in the bottom of the tank, but to no avail. What are the steps I need to take to remove the tank, so I can get it fixed right.

If it is the same as my 1970 you need to remove the rear valance and bumper to make it easier to reach the two bolts in the end of the straps.

Detach all pipes etc as well of course.

The filler tube has to be detatched (four screws) from the inside of the rear quarter. It just pulls out of the large rubber grommet in the tank. It is a bugger to get back in I can tell you.

Other than that it is easy.

Thanks Dave,

I got tank out this weekend, got a swivel head socket to get up to the J-bolts so I didn't have to remove the valance or bumper. Overall wasn't to bad getting out, will need to buy a new filler tube gasket, kinda ripped the old one up beyond use, ever again, pulling out the filler tube and now I need to find some place to get it welded, but other than that not to bad.
Has anybody out there tried that Por-15 tank repair stuff, any recommendtions, or should I just have it welded and or should I just buy a new tank?

I used the por-15. It is leaking again now. Just slightly.

BUT that may be because I did not use enough of the stuff. It says in the instructions to use enough to be able to coat the whole inside and have some left over to pour back into the tin. When I did mine I coated the inside but there was not a drop spare to pour back out. So there may not have been enough. It did seem like good stuff. I put some on a screwdriver shaft and it was really tough.

Mine would leak from one spot, next year another. I got tired of taking it out. I put a new tank in and have no more leaks
