Im buying an (almost) complete -66 440 as starting material for an engine building project to my -70 Challenger R/T. Problem is that the old dirty monster is 500 km's away from the home garage. Trying to find out if I can bring it home in my standard transportation vehicle which is an old SAAB 900 whith possibility to remove rear seat (extremly boring but fairly reliable wreck). Anyone know the wheight of a complete 440? Anyone tried to fit one into a SAAB ? (not between the front wheels) Thanks! / Lars

If I remember right you are talking about 700-800lbs dry or about 350Kg Lars.

I think your Saab will be sitting on the axle pretty hard.

Linda and me took our 440 block to be machined in her 3.5L V8 Range Rover. That was OK but it still sank a lot on the suspension.

I would hire a van or pick-up if I were you.

Don't even think about it Lars. In the unlikely event you get it in, you'll wreck the car getting it out. I'm not sure what a complete 440 weighs, but I will guess about 250 kilo's.

I reckon take a van or an open back truck of some kind. You will also need an engine crane to lift it in and out.

I think with everything from carb to exhaust manifolds fitted the 440 is about 800lbs Jim.

I remember moving it around in my garage before I bought the engine stand and thinking "If this thing just tips against my leg it will snap the bone in a second".

OK, thanks guys. You have convinced me. From what you say it would probably be as bad as transporting my father in law. Every detail of your descriptions fit exactly with my experiences in that field:

Well, I won't try to change your mind Lars, but I transported a 440 (without intake/exhaust manifold and carb in the back of my volkswagen...) It drove like •••• with the 440 in it but I did came home although it was 'only' a 150km trip. So if possible you better use a truck as said before.
