Synthetic oils.

I was reading the MMA site about synthetic oils. I'm not a member of the MMA so can't post there. If you change the oil regularly, like every other race meeting, then synthetic doesn't really work out as cost effective. It is supposed to give a slight increase in power though. Another thing is that synthetic oil plays havoc with prepped racetrack surfaces, it burns through it for some reason and takes much longer to clean up (so i'm told). I don't use it myself. It does last longer and would be a good idea in a road car. Prelube an engine before you start it after standing long periods. Something which you have to do every time its stands more than a couple of days with a milodon external oiling system, its also a good opportunity to check that sacrificial bronze gear drive too.

I will copy and post this onto the MMA board Tig as you raise a couple of good points there.

Not a member! Shame on you!

Ted.
The MMA is our Mopar club (Mopar Muscle Association) based here in the UK but with members in Europe as well as the USA. A great bunch of people and the MMA mesage board users in particular have really hit it off with each other and help one another out a lot with parts and helping hands etc. It is becoming a real 'family' if you know what I mean. The bi-monthly magazine runs to about 70 pages a month. All stuff written by members. Not many clubs have that many members that are prepared to put the effort in like these lads (and lasses).

We are all meeting up this weekend at the Mopar EuroNats at Santa Pod Raceway in England.

There is a link to their web site at the bottom of my 'Topics' page here.

Synthetic oils.

I have had some very good luck with Synthetic Oils. Here is a story. I had a '63 Impala, very hot engine, and a weekend driver. I had some leaks develope so pulled the engine and the pan. The splash plate was corroded. I did my thing with the seals and then started using Synthetic Oil. Castrol at the time, now Mobil. I pulled the engine again the next year, (nothing else to doImage and guess what, there was no corrosion. The only problem, I see with synthetic is clean up. If you drip it on the concrete, it will not clean up easily.
