Charcoal canister

Postby uk73andy » 06 Jun 2015 11:27

Took the canister out of the engine bay yesterday, as I'm replacing the washer bottle and tidying up that inner fender... Is it possible to open the canister up, or are they sealed units? I just had one hose connected on mine, from the tank... is there any advantage in hooking up the outlet to the carb? And what happens with the other outlet ('PURGE')?

The canister seems to be full and quite heavy, although the foam at the bottom is a bit damaged, so some of the charcoal is coming out. I've resealed it with some cloth for the moment, but if I can make a proper repair it would obviously be better. Does anyone have any info about these canisters?!

OK I found some info in the owners manual and a Chilton tune-up manual... seems there should be a fibreglass filter in the bottom of the canister, and a purge valve with lots of tubing to the carb and distributor vacuum assembly. Might just find a suitable filter and leave it at that.

ETA: ...and I just found that RockAuto sell replacement filters for less than One English Pound! So I've ordered a couple along with a few other bits & pieces.
