What is this and what does it do...??

Postby Goldenblack440 » 18 Dec 2008 11:40

HI all- this is a part that has plagued me for a long time as i have no idea what it/they is/are there for. See pic. They are very solid pieces of metal. I thought they might be rear tow points. A Mopar mechanic told me they were rear muffler/tailpipe hang points but i doubt it. My 73 Rallye has one either side, my 71 318 shopping trolley has two as well, but this picture of a genuine AAR Cuda has only one (perhaps the other has been removed). I was thinking of removing them to save weight- as you know, these Challengers do not need any extra weight at 4615 pounds, which is what is stated on my car as my GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight). THanks

I think they are tie down points for when the cars were shipped by rail or road.

I remember seeing a pic on this forum with a car being shipped!

It showed a different style of brackets, but they bolted to those two holes.

Yup, good ol #48. Like a Ghost from the past. :P

Mine still has the brackets also. It was shipped from LA to Buellton Ca. where it was purchased (about 100 miles north). Most likely on a car transport truck.

They were on my car too but I think I took them off just last year?

Funny enough I don't remember much about last year. :s008:

Luckily my past number was 48 and not 666. The nickname Ghost666 would have been a bit scary. :s008:

Hey, thanks for that info- i read all the posts including the one initiated by Mr 48 in 2005. I would never have guessed what they were! Now i know. I can take them off and not worry, they will make great doover-lackeys or wind chimes, and save some weight too
thanks.
